Court Filing and Document Runs in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Superior Court makes attorneys e-file almost everything, but some papers still have to go in on paper, and courtesy copies still have to reach the courtroom. Angel City Legal, a registered Los Angeles County process server ten minutes from downtown, runs them for attorneys and law firms, and carries permits, apostilles and applications to downtown government counters for businesses, from $50 per run plus fees.

What still goes on paper at LASC

LASC Local Rule 3.4(a) requires electronic filing "of all documents in all civil case types by litigants represented by attorneys unless the court exempts parties," and the probate and family rules do the same. The rule then lists the documents that may not be e-filed. Those are the runs we make:

Judicial challenges
Peremptory challenges and challenges for cause under Code of Civil Procedure sections 170.6 and 170.3
Bonds
Bonds and undertakings
Exhibits
Trial and evidentiary hearing exhibits
Ex parte
An ex parte application filed with a new complaint, including Writs and Receivers matters at Stanley Mosk
Under seal
Documents submitted conditionally under seal (the motion itself is e-filed)
Lodgments
Paper attachments to a Notice of Lodgment, with your pick-up slip
Probate originals
Wills, codicils and original trust documents

Paper filings go to the clerk's window by 4:30pm (Local Rule 3.4(h)); an exempt filer's ex parte papers in the Central District go to the first-floor window at Stanley Mosk, fees paid, by 11:00am. We plan every run against those cutoffs and send you the conformed copy or the clerk's receipt the same day.

Courtesy copies to the courtroom

The court's civil e-filing order still requires printed courtesy copies of certain e-filed papers delivered to the courtroom, among them pleadings and motions of 26 pages or more, demurrers, anti-SLAPP motions, summary judgment motions and motions to compel further responses. Send us the PDF or the printed set and we deliver it to the department the same day, $50 per run.

Downtown government counter runs

Most downtown agency counters have moved to online filing and appointments, but some paperwork still has to be carried in. For businesses, contractors, design professionals and law firms, we take completed, signed documents to these counters, wait in line, pay the agency fees you advance, and send back the stamped copy or receipt:

LADBS, 201 N. Figueroa
Permit issuance, express permits, records requests and plan-check submittals at the Department of Building and Safety's Metro office, on the appointment you book. LADBS requires a written owner authorization for an agent (notarized, or signed with a copy of the owner's ID), and card payments need the cardholder present, so fees go by check. From $99 per trip.
City Planning, 201 N. Figueroa
Hard-copy case filing packages delivered on your Development Services Center appointment, with the department's drop-off transmittal form. From $99 per trip.
CA Secretary of State, 300 S. Spring
Apostilles at the Los Angeles office, same day, no appointment. The Secretary of State lets anyone request an apostille on someone else's behalf; the state fee is $20, paid by card or check.
LADWP, 111 N. Hope
Water service requests at the walk-in counter, Room 1425.
LA County Assessment Appeals Board, Hahn Hall
Paper assessment appeal applications filed at Room B4 of the Hall of Administration, with your written authorization attached, during the filing season.

Secretary of State, LADWP and Assessment Appeals runs are $50 plus the agency's fees; LADBS and City Planning runs start at $99 per trip, since they run on appointments and waits. Every run is quoted in writing before we go. We carry what you give us, as you give it to us: we do not fill out forms, choose what to file, or speak for you on the substance of an application.

How it works

Send the request through the intake form with the courthouse, the department if any, the deadline, and the documents. We confirm the price, the court fees and the timing in writing, usually within two business hours, and send a payment link or an invoice. Several documents for the same courthouse on the same trip are one run. Court fees are advanced and billed at cost. We file what you send, as you send it; we do not prepare, review or advise on filings.

Need a party served in the same case? We also serve the City, the County, LAUSD and Metro at their downtown counters for $79, and corporations at their Glendale registered agents for $49.

Questions

Do attorneys still file paper at Los Angeles Superior Court?
Only for a short list. LASC Local Rule 3.4(a) requires attorney-represented litigants to e-file all documents in all civil case types unless the court exempts them, and probate and family law follow the same rule. The documents that must still be filed on paper are peremptory challenges and challenges for cause (CCP 170.6 and 170.3), bonds and undertakings, trial and evidentiary hearing exhibits, an ex parte application filed with a new complaint, documents submitted conditionally under seal, and paper attachments to a Notice of Lodgment; probate adds wills, codicils and original trust documents.
What are the filing hours at Stanley Mosk Courthouse?
LASC clerk's offices are open 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, except court holidays, and exempt paper filings must be at the clerk's window by 4:30pm (Local Rule 3.4(h)). In the Central District, an exempt filer's ex parte papers must be filed at the first-floor window at Stanley Mosk, with fees paid, by 11:00am.
Do you deliver courtesy copies to the courtroom?
Yes. The court's civil e-filing order requires printed courtesy copies of certain e-filed papers delivered to the courtroom, including pleadings and motions of 26 pages or more, demurrers, anti-SLAPP motions, summary judgment motions and motions to compel further responses. We deliver them the same day for $50.
How much does a court filing run cost?
$50 per run plus the court's fees at cost, for attorneys and law firms. Several documents for the same courthouse on the same trip are one run. Send the request through the intake form and we confirm the price and timing in writing before we go.
Can you take permits or applications to LADBS or other downtown counters for me?
Yes, for businesses, contractors, design professionals and law firms: we carry completed, signed paperwork to the Department of Building and Safety and City Planning at 201 N. Figueroa, the Secretary of State's apostille counter at 300 S. Spring, the LADWP counter at 111 N. Hope, and the County Assessment Appeals Board at Hahn Hall, wait in line, pay the agency fees you advance, and send back the stamped copy or receipt. Many of those counters now work by appointment, and we keep the appointment you book. Secretary of State, LADWP and Assessment Appeals runs are $50 plus agency fees; LADBS and City Planning runs start at $99 per trip. Every run is quoted in writing first.
Do you file papers for people representing themselves?
Not at this time. Our filing runs are for attorneys and law firms. If you are representing yourself and we served your papers, we can e-file the proof of service from that serve for you for $35.

Angel City Legal is an independent registered process server (Los Angeles County #2026063663), not a law firm. Court rules are summarized from the LASC Local Rules effective July 1, 2026 and the court's civil e-filing general order as read on October 9, 2026; the court's current rules control. Filing runs are offered to attorneys and law firms.
